Chelsea 1905

Chelsea Football Club was founded on the 10th of March 1905 by brothers Gus Mears and Joseph Mears in the upstairs room of the local pub in Chelsea, The Rising Sun, now The Butchers Hook.

Initially the club was to be called Fulham FC but there was already a club named Fulham FC therefore the Mears brothers decided to name it after the adjacent borough - Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea. This was after London FC, Kensington FC and Stamford Bridge FC were rejected.

Chelsea wore Eton Blue shirts. They wore it after the racing colours of Lord Chelsea, along with white shorts and dark blue socks. Now, the current English Premier League Champions wear dark blue shirts, dark blue shorts and white socks.

Unfortunately I am unable to find the starting 11 from our 1905/ 06 season but I managed to find 4 players from that season, and the manager.

William "Fatty" Foulke - In goal, the 23 - stone keeper, English international, who previously won the FA Cup with Sheffield Wednesday by defeating Derby County by 4 goals to 1. He was nicknamed "fatty" due to his weight...

John Robertson - Both player and manager, John Robertson, the Scotland international joined "The Blues" in 1905 and ended his career being both a player and a manager in 1906.

Jack Kirwan - The Irish international was the first Irish Chelsea player. He joined Chelsea when he was 27 years of age. Scoring 15 goals in 73 games.

James Windridge - James Windridge was born on 21st of October 1882. He ended his 6 year career at Chelsea in 1911. He scored an impressive 54 goals in 143 matches.

John Robertson was both a player and a manager for Chelsea.
